about

I enter a room for the first time and am immediately struck with the sensory experience of newness and wonder: the visuals, the smells, the texture below my feet, the people and the ambient noise. All fresh to my senses. But the most dynamic impression immediately felt is that of the vibe, and what that vibe contains historically, presently and into the exciting future of my visit.

The first guitar notes of this recording and the ensuing entrances of the trumpet, bass and drums thrust me into an extraordinary space where I instantaneously feel I have entered an extremely ebullient, creative, welcoming and hip!!! room. A fantastic adventure is commencing. It is a vibrant signal from the Signal Quartet that I am invited to audibly witness four musicians purveying their opinion about life as a band and as individuals. Trumpeter and composer Ben Wolkins’ formidable and eclectic artistic personality shines on this recording. He is a true improviser; constructing his melodies in the creative moment one note at a time. His solos have me on the edge of my seat smiling with suspense as I follow his lines to their majestic conclusion. He presents these ideas with a glorious sound that is filled with emotion, mystery and mastery. I hear that Ben has absorbed the history of improvised music; those influences are strongly felt. But what is heard is a view into the future of
how this music can sound.

Great composers always have an inherent connection between their improvising and composing languages. Bach is a prime example as well as Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker and Thad Jones. I hear Ben’s improvisational language in his compositions; not just from notes he plays but the intent and purpose of a complete artistic statement. And the diverse palette of grooves, moods and sonic environments on this recording emphasizes his imagination as a composer.

It is joy to listen to these four musicians engage in inspired conversation. The telepathy and empathy is heard throughout this recording. They are musical brothers with a remarkable spirit and common vision. Check out how guitarist Ian Blunden collaborates with Ben during the trumpet solo on Nothing Missing. And Ian’s solo on Slow Brew displays his drive and wonderful melodic language. I am a strong proponent of bass solos and to my delight bassist Eric Nachtrab is featured as the first soloist on this recording. With a magnificent sound and massive feel for the groove he sets the vibe for the entire listening journey. And I love his bass intro for Slow Brew. Drummer Sean Perlmutter propels, swings, bashes and crashes with sensitivity and purpose. His playing makes me want to grab my horn and join the band. Second Exploration features one of my favorite events in music, the trumpet/drum duet. I can’t wait to hear their Third Exploration!

I have entered The Signal Quartet’s welcoming and inspiring room many times. Only multiple visits can unveil its magnitude of secrets. And I’m looking forward to my next visit and for Ben Wolkins’ gift of the next room.
